Namal to become head of Sri Lanka Cricket - End of Cricket in Sri Lanka !
The President’s eldest son and parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has decided to contest for the Presidency of Sri Lanka Cricket, sources from the Sports Ministry said.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to dissolve the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee and hold an election to choose a new cricket board.
Namal is to contest the election as the representative of the Hambantota District Cricket Association.
Sources said that if Namal enters the election for the main chair of Sri Lanka Cricket, Nishantha Ranatunge would be presented as the secretary of Namal’s group of office bearers.
A special discussion was held at the Sports Ministry under the patronage of Minister Mahindananda to discuss the next appointment as captain and how elections should be held to appoint office bearers to Sri Lanka Cricket.
Also Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa has asked Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage today morning to postpone the election of office bearers to Sri Lanka Cricket by a few months and to appoint one Sam residing in England as the head of the Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee, it is learnt.
Sources said that Sam owned a private cricket field in England and that “Sam” is an alias used by the person.
It is also learnt that former Interim Committee Secretary K. Mathivanan is to be appointed as the new Interim Committee Secretary. The other names that have been proposed to be included in the new Interim Committee are Sanath Jayasruiya, Pramodaya Wickremesinghe and Asoka Pathirana.
It has also been proposed to appoint current Interim Committee head, D.S. de Silva as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sri Lanka Cricket.
According to sources, the Sports Minister has proposed that a motion be presented to parliament where the chair of Sri Lanka Cricket would not be changed until the next Cricket World Cup in 2015 and once the motion is approved, Namal is to be appointed to the post.
