Want to play tennis with Andy Roddick?
September 1, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Andy Roddick | Comments(1)

Charity is important. Once I remember Andy Roddick complaining how little media coverage he gets for his charity work. I agree. We are not a traditional news outlet, but we can make our little contribution and draw your attention to Andy Roddick’s charity efforts. Participate in a raffle where the grand prize includes a hitting session with Andy Roddick and special guest privileges to the 4th Annual Andy Roddick Foundation Gala where Sir Elton John will perform a concert for the private party. Get more information from Celebrities for Charity site.

Roger Federer’s interview - Wimbledon final
July 6, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Andy Roddick, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Wimbeldon | Comments(0)

Roger Federer interview
Wimbledon Final, July 5, 2009.

Q. How hard was that compared to other finals you have played here?

ROGER FEDERER: It was difficult, because I thought Andy played great. You know, I mean, I’m obviously ?? I know how it is to play a Wimbledon final. I know how it is to play a fifth set in the final, in a Wimbledon final.

But it felt different. It was so different to what I experienced the last few years with Rafa, you know, where it was a baseline game. Today it was a serve and return game, which is more classical for grass.

“I’m a little crazy; I wouldn’t want to date me,” says Serena Williams during her interview with BBC on the eve of Wimbledon. I wouldn’t call me a Serena Fan, but I cannot deny that she is a great player and an interesting character. Watch the interview here. (via Women Who Serve)

Serenaism: $75,000 fine, house remodeling, and health issues
May 15, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Serena Williams, Tennis, Women's Tennis | Comments(0)

Apparently I am not the only one getting tired of hearing Serena Williams’ whining about money and WTA rules, and making wrong decisions about her health. Kamakshi Tandon also questions her decision of playing while injured and putting all the blame on WTA for its fines and punishments.

Kamakshi writes:

For a player at Williams’ level, pulling out of Madrid would mean a $75,000 fine, plus giving up the $400,000 in bonus money the WTA awards to top players for playing all four mandatory events. But Williams had already forfeited the bonus when she pulled out of the mandatory BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, so the only financial cost of pulling out of Madrid would have been the fine, which is relatively modest given her $2 million earnings to date this season.

Still, the recently cost-conscious Williams sees even $75,000 as steep. “I’m remodeling a house,” she said. “Seventy-five thousand dollars — I don’t know about to anyone else, but that’s a lot of money to me. That’s like my whole furniture bill — some stairs, rugs, that can go a long way. In this economy, I’m not in a position to just write out $75,000 checks. Are you?”

Keep in mind that Serena has made 14 million dollars last year alone. Her decision to risk her health just to save $75,000 is not very wise in terms of her professional career, AND it even doesn’t make a business sense. If she stays healthy she can be on the tour for many years to come. And as long as she is playing tennis and she is in the public eye, it means she will keep depositing more money in her bank account. Much more than $75,000.

Serenaism of the Day
May 5, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Serena Williams, Women's Tennis | Comments(2)

At a news conference at the Italian Open in Rome:

Serena Williams: “We all know who the real No. 1 is. Quite frankly, I’m the best in the world.” Asked which opponent she feared most, the answer was: “Probably myself. I always beat myself.”

Serena Williams on Jay Leno, with Common again?
February 10, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Serena Williams | Comments(0)

The Women’s Tennis Blog has posted the video of Serena Williams appearance on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show. Check it out. In another “breaking news development” (hehe), Serena was spotted with his on-again, off-again boyfriend Common. I guess their relationship is “on” again.

Triple win for Serena Williams
January 31, 2009 | By Nina In American Tennis Players, Australian Open, Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, Tennis, Women's Tennis | Comments(0)

Serena Williams Australian OPen

Serena Williams once again demonstrated that she is THE ONE, AND the number 1 in the world. Serena simply overpowered the No 3 seeded Russian Dinara Safina to win her fourth Australian Open tennis title and move to 10 career Grand Slams. No. 2 seed Williams defeated Safina 6-0, 6- 3 in 59 minutes. She won her other Australian Open titles in 2003, 2005, 2007. Some commentators keep repeating how she is always victorious in odd years, but I have only one explanation for that phenomenon, it is called “coincidence.”

Why triple win? With her Australian Open title, Serena once again becomes the No 1 in the world, and (yes it gets even better for her), she collects $1.3 million US dollars to lift her career winnings to $23.4 million. Two days ago Serena Williams passed golfer Annika Sorenstam as the top prize money-earner in women’s sports history. YES, history! Wow… congratulations! Would she please stop whining about the money? [I had to say something nasty, no? After all I was rooting for Safina.]
