Shooting incident at Katunayake - Ravi Wijegunawardena’s evidence proves that former IGP and the government had lied

It has been revealed that former IGP Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya and the government had lied and misled the public with regard to the Katunayake incident where the police shot at FTZ workers.

DIG Ravi Wijegunawardena giving evidence at the magisterial inquiry in to FTZ worker Roshen Chanaka’s death following the shooting incident has said that the IGP had asked him to travel to Katunayake on a special assignment the day before the protest, which was May 29th.

He had said that he had then traveled to Katunayake and that he had gone with a group of policemen to provide security to several government ministers and MPs had arrived in Katunayake around 8.30 a.m.

However, following the incident the former IGP said the police officers had gone to Katunayake without receiving any orders from him. The government issuing a statement said that the police was firmly orders not to go to Katunayake and that the police officers had gone to the area without the government’s knowledge.

Nevertheless, the statement made by Wijegunawardena has proven that the police had gone to Katunayake on a directive by the former IGP and that they had provided security to a group of government ministers who had visited the area with the President’s knowledge.

The magisterial inquiry was held before Negombo Chief Magistrate A.H.N.P. Amerasinghe.
